सनातनी शब्द के इस्तेमाल भारतीय उपमहादीप में दू प्रमुख अरथ में होखे ला - ओह लोग खाती जे अपना के सनातन धर्म के माने वाला कहे ला, आ कबो-कबो खुद सनातन धर्म खाती भी जे हिंदू धर्म के एगो रूढ़िवादी शाखा भा मत हवे।

एह शब्द के उत्पत्ती के बारे में मानल जाला कि परंपरावादी हिंदू लोग अपना धरम खाती "हिंदू" शब्द के इस्तेमाल से बचे खाती एह शब्द के इस्तेमाल शुरू कइल, काहें से कि "हिंदू" शब्द संस्कृत मूल के ना मानल जाला बलुक बिदेसी शब्द मानल जाला। हिंदू धरम के दू भाग में बिभाजन, मध्य काल के संत लोग द्वारा बिबिध ब्याख्या आ ओकरे बाद के जमाना में भइल हिंदू धर्म सुधार के परिणाम के कारण बनल शाखा भा मत सभ से पुराना जमाना के चलल आ रहल परंपरागत रीति-रिवाज वाला शाखा के अलगा करे खाती भी कइल जाला; एह बिभाजन में परंपरागत मत के सनातनी आ बाद वाला सभ के समाजी शाखा के रूप में देखल जाला। हालाँकि, दक्खिन भारत में शैव, वैष्णव आ शाक्त के बिभाजन प्रमुख रूप से स्वीकार कइल जाला, उत्तर भारत में सनातनी आ समाजी के बिभाजन प्रबल रूप लिहलस जेह में बाकी के ऊपर बतावल बिभाजन सभ के आपस में घालमेल हो गइल। कुछ बिद्वान लोग एकरा के ईसाई धर्म के कैथोलिक आ प्रोटेस्टेंट रुपी बिभाजन से भी तुलना करे ला।

सनातन धर्म के शाब्दिक अरथ होला "हमेसा से चलल आइल धर्म" भा "जेकर आदि-अंत न होखे"। ई शब्द अब अधिकतर हिंदू धर्म खाती इस्तेमाल होला। एह शब्द के प्रस्ताव हिंदू धर्म खाती एह कारण कइल बतावल जाला काहें कि "हिंदू"शब्द भारतीय उत्पत्ती के ना हवे बलुक बिदेसी (फ़ारसी/ईरानी) शब्द हवे।[1] एह शब्दावली के इस्तेमाल हिंदू धर्म सुधार के दौरान भी ब्यापक भइल जेह में परंपरावादी लोग अपना मूल धर्म खाती ई गैर फ़ारसी आ भारतीय नाँव बीछल।[2][3]

वर्तमान इस्तेमाल में सनातन धर्म के इस्तमाल "रूढ़िवादी" भा परंपरावादी ("शाश्वत") के अरथ में कइल जाला जेकर मकसद हिंदू धर्म सुधार के आंदोलन सभ (जइसे आर्य समाज, राधा स्वामी संप्रदाय, रामकृष्ण मिशन वगैरह) के बाद भइल बदलाव से पुराना परंपरा सभ के अलगा करे खाती हवे।[4][5][6]

एह शब्द धर्म सनातन के क्लासिकल संस्कृत साहित्य में भी आइल उद्धरण खोजल गइल बा, जइसे कि मनुस्मृति (4-138)[7] में आ भागवत पुराण में,[8][9] जहाँ एकर इस्तेमाल "ब्रह्मांडी ब्यवस्था" के रूप में भइल बा।
