{{Indic glyph}} is used to add a table of related characters from various Indic scripts to articles on pan-Indic letters.

Parameters[संपादन करीं]

The template {{Indic glyph}} has two types of parameters:

1) parameters about the general class of characters

  • letname - Letter name for table title and default image alt text (eg "Ka").
  • previousletter - Next article name (eg "Tta").
  • previousdisp Next display name (eg Ṭa). Optional
  • nextletter Previous article name (eg, "Sha").
  • nextdisp - Previous display name (eg Śa). Optional
  • ipa - IPA symbol of core phonetic value.
  • ipanote1 - note about first IPA. Optional
  • ipa2 - alternate IPA. Optional
  • ipanote2 - note about alternate IPA. Optional
  • ipa3 - tertiary IPA. Optional
  • ipanote3 - note about tertiary IPA. Optional
  • iast - IAST transliteration. Displays twice as lower case and title case.
  • iscii - ISCII code point (in hex, displays both).
  • iscii2 - Second ISCII code point. Not yet implemented
  • note - Other notes. Optional

2) parameters to specify each individual character. These are generally prefaced by the script's ISO 15924 code, an infix "2" if a second character for that script, and several specifications:

  • xxxxcp and xxxx2cp - Unicode codepoint, without preceding "U+". See #Multi-codepoint characters below for character sequence workaround. For full template function, this parameter should be specified for any character included in the table that has a Unicode codepoint. Instead of leaving a blank value, this parameter should be fully omitted - either by commenting out or not including the parameter in the template at all - for any non-existent or unmapped characters, e.g. when a script does not have a representative for that letter.
  • xxxximg and xxxx2img - File name, for displaying an image of the character instead of plain text. Optional
  • xxxxletname and xxxx2letname - Used for the alt text for the image. Defaults to the generic letter name displayed at the table heading. Optional
  • xxxxalt and xxxx2alt - Specifies an alternate codepoint for the current character. Currently only implemented for Tibetan, which has "subjoined" letters for attaching to a root character. Optional

Exceptions[संपादन करीं]

There are a few exceptions to the standard parameters, above.

Multi-codepoint characters[संपादन करीं]

xxxxcp and xxxx2cp are used to specify the codepoints for a character. When an image file is not specified, this parameter will output the character in plain text, and will display the codepoint below the character in either case. Sometimes, a character will be specified by a codepoint sequence instead of a single codepoint. Character sequences (such as a repha or conjunct), can be trivially invoked by inserting the XML numeric character reference escape code ;&#x between successive character codepoints, e.g. 0915;्&#x0937 for Devanagari Kṣa क्ष. This will output the character sequence faithfully for anyone with the appropriate typefaces and rendering support, and the XML escape characters will be wiped when specifying the character codepoint in the template table. This does not work with XML character entity references, such as  . See Devangari and Gujarati (devacp and gujrcp) in the example code below.

Brahmi variants and Tocharian[संपादन करीं]

Much like Latin text represents bold, italics, Old English, and Chancery hand with the same codepoints, the Brahmi Unicode block is used to encode several variants of Brahmi writing from the 3rd century BC to the 6th century CE. The {{Indic glyph}} template allows you to specify image files for three different Brahmi variants separately:

  • ashokaimg - Image file for the early Brahmi Ashoka script. This highly geometric style is the prototype Brahmi chosen as the representative glyphs for Brahmi in the Unicode Standard.
  • kushanaimg - Image file for the middle Brahmi Kushana script. This form of Brahmi included a few additional characters not found in earlier forms for transcribing Sanskrit.
  • guptaimg - Image file for the late Brahmi Gupta script.

Note that because of the separate Ashoka, Kushana and Gupta images, the expected brahimg parameter is not functional.

The closely related Tocharian alphabet was originally intended to be represented with the Brahmi Unicode encoding. But Tocharian has a different vowel inventory than other Brahmi scripts, and its combining behavior is quite different in some fundamental ways. As such, Tocharian is identified by the Script Encoding Initiative as a script for separate encoding, and its display in {{Indic glyph}} uses the "toch" prefix, even though the script and that four-letter code are not yet specified in ISO 15924:

  • tochcp and toch2cp - Should be omitted until such time as the Unicode allocation is established.
  • tochimg and toch2img - File name, for displaying an image of the character instead of plain text. Currently ncessary parameter.
  • tochletname and toch2letname - Used for the alt text for the image. Defaults to the generic letter name displayed at the table heading. Optional parameter.
