English: The map shows the comparative rate of violence against women in Indian states and union territories in 2012.
Crime rate in this map is the broadest definition of crime against women under Indian law reported by the data source. It includes rape, sexual assault, harassment and insult to modesty, kidnapping, abduction, cruelty by intimate partner or relatives, importation or trafficking of girls, persecution for dowry, dowry deaths, indecency, and all other crimes listed in Indian Penal Code. Data Source: Crime in India 2012 Statistics, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India, Table 5.1, page 385. The overall Indian crime rate per 100,000, against all population, is from the same NCRB data source, Table 1.3, page 196. The overall crime rate against women per 100,000 in USA is from Shannan Catalano (November 2012), Intimate Partner Violence, 1993–2010, Bureau of Justice Statistics, US Department of Justice, table on page 10. To calculate the crime rate against women, only the total women population in each state or union territory was used by the NCRB data source. The crime rate for "all population" was based on the total population of India. This is also true for Catalano's DoJ report on violence against women in USA.
